Case Study: Workplace stress and improving job satisfaction and commitment

Posted: 01/02/09

A business psychologist was on the board of the Environment and Transport Department in a major English local authority - about one- third of the organisation.  In 2002 there was concern at the level of sickness absence, which was nearly 10 days a year on average.

With the support of colleagues, the psychologist introduced a targeted package of measures to reduce workplace stress and improve job satisfaction and commitment, including job
enrichment and team communication enhancements. Within a year the level of sickness absence had fallen by 30%, with significant improvements in output and morale.

A further benefit to the organisation was that the extended delegation arrangements introduced as part of this work relieved pressure on overloaded senior managers at Board and divisional head level, enabling an additional improvement in strategy development and leadership.
