In this webinar we introduce the CPP (Cognitive Process Profile) which is used to measure cognitive potential through an automated simulation exercise. We focus on identifying the skills involved in information processing, identifying which competencies require increased or decreased focus in either operational or strategic environments (as specified by Elliott Jaques’ Stratified Systems Theory). The CPP is not an IQ test, nor is it an aptitude test.

It measures one’s cognitive responses to new situations, providing a strong indication of which cognitive skills emerge when faced with ambiguity. The purpose of the assessment, being a simulation, is to measure cognitive skills when one does not have the luxury of a familiar comfort zone or “auto-pilot” mode within which to work.

The changing nature of the world of work as well as the “fourth industrial revolution” requires a heightened understanding of such cognitive skills in order to cope with the demands of the increased volatility that is dominating many industries. Case studies will be used in the webinar (along with examples of well-known individuals like Mozart and Steve Jobs) but participants are also provided with a complimentary CPP assessment to ensure the benefit of personal meaning and insight into their own results.

Learning Objectives and Content Schedule

You will learn through the use of slides, exercises and interactive conversations with the facilitator and other trainees. In this webinar, you will cover the foundation to:

  • Identify key thinking processes in problem solving
  • Understand information processing capabilities and preferences as they relate to the SST model (operational and strategic environments)
  • Develop awareness of possible problem areas in becoming “stuck” in a particular cognitive stage rather than moving towards more advanced stages of thinking
  • These development areas include the questions that one can learn to ask oneself in order to increase one’s awareness and engage in more advanced types of problem solving
  • Focus on techniques to transfer newly acquired cognitive skills for work-related application (learning what to focus more on, and what to focus less on to promote more effective problem solving after the workshop, which can be generalised to the participants’ work in their own fields)

 

These are the topics covered in the workshop:

  • Introduction to the CPP assessment
  • Discussion of SST and Judgement (case studies linking competencies to job roles, including examples of well-known strategic thinkers such as Steve Jobs, Richard Branson, Elon Musk and Sol Kerzner)
  • Introduction to the holonic model of information processing competencies (including examples of how specific competencies may have been optimised by extremely talented individuals like Mozart and Steven Spielberg)
  • Discussion of case studies in which we will discuss whether certain competencies require increased or decreased focus for either operational or strategic roles
  • Explanation of the metacognitive questions that one should learn to ask in enhancing awareness of one’s thinking

What is the course about

The workshop will take the form of an abridged version of the CPP training with the aim of equipping the participants to recognise that different cognitive skills may be required in roles that are either operational or strategic. High scores on certain competencies are not always desired, depending on what the requirements of the job role are. The case studies will therefore provide insight into the importance of the cognitive processes and indicate the environments within which they can most effectively be applied. The course would proceed as follows:

  1. A brief introduction to the CPP assessment technique. The CPP externalises and tracks thinking processes according to thousands of measurement points, the results of which are interpreted algorithmically by an expert system. The CPP is based on Dr Maretha Prinsloo’s holonic model of thinking processes which includes: Memory, Exploration, Analysis, Structuring and Transformation capabilities and preferences – all of which are guided by metacognitive processes (awareness of one’s thinking). Higher levels of metacognitive awareness are associated with improved problem solving.
  2. A broad picture overview of work complexity, as based on Elliott Jaques’ Stratified Systems Theory (SST), and how the CPP results of cognitive complexity complement it. Participants will be given an exercise to identify the levels of work of various job roles and how to link individual CPP profiles to roles.
  3. A brief introduction to the holonic model of thinking processes.
  4. Case studies will subsequently be discussed and questions regarding the development of specific competencies will be asked. Participants will answer questions using the “Polls” option (via Zoom) to determine whether the identified competencies require increased or decreased focus to enhance operational or strategic thinking
  5. The key metacognitive criteria (necessary for specific cognitive development) will be explored in order to learn to ask oneself relevant questions to enhance awareness and prevent fixating on a particular stage of cognitive development
