Is Cognitive Diversity important for Psychological Safety?

Cognitive diversity is where people think differently to each other and have different experiences and beliefs that contribute to how they look at and solve problems. The inclusion of people who have different problem solving styles offers a unique perspective because they challenges each other’s thinking. It is not as visible as some other types of ‘identity diversity’, such as gender or ethnic diversity and therefore organisations often struggle to create a workforce that is highly cognitively diverse.
Psychological safety is a belief that one will not be punished or humiliated for speaking up with ideas, questions, concerns or mistakes. Group members can raise issues and ask for help because they feel mutually supportive.
To enable people and teams to perform at their best, we need to consider the role that strengths plan in creating a cognitively diversity, and the impact this has on psychological safety.
Strengths energise us and help us to achieve a personal competitive advantage at work, while an environment of psychological safety allows teammates to speak up, share ideas and concerns without fear of being punished. Zircon BeTalent have researched and discovered that the relationship between Psychological Safety and Strengths tells a story – having cognitive diversity (in the form of different strengths) can contribute to a psychologically safe environment. This presentation will review recent research and how it can help us to create high performing teams and be more effective in the workplace.
Helen is a Senior Consultant with assessment and development experience; predominately in high potential identification. She has managed international projects for a range of clients including EY, IPF, HSBC, Rank Group, Atos and the Environment Agency. She is in a unique position to share the research that Zircon BeTalent has been conducting into Psychological Safety and how it is essential to create high performing teams.
