“Nudging” Social Mobility by Enabling Wider Upskilling Investment

Speaker: Neil Morrison, HR Director, Severn Trent Water

Session outline

Arguably, one of the reasons why certain practical and engineering skills are in short supply is because young to mid career people are fearful that specialised skills will become outdated over the period of their careers and that skills updating and retraining will not be guaranteed if it is offered at all. In short, talent management is the ingredient which is in short supply in many organisations and this can impact on lower aspirations and ultimately reduced social mobility.

Organisations need to be smarter at talent management in manufacturing and engineering sectors, and link this into strategic planning, delivering a skills based agenda.   This presentation will provide an insight into how this has been achieved at Severn Trent, what it means for Business Psychologists, and how HR and Business Psychologists could create powerful partnerships in other organisations to effect positive change.  As a psychologist working in HR, Neil Morrison is uniquely positioned to promote this agenda.

Neil Morrison joined Severn Trent in 2017 as their HR director having worked as HR director for Penguin Random House, being responsible for a successful international merger.  He started his working life as a lecturer in psychology before moving into the commercial environment, with varous HR roles in FTSE 100 organisations.  He writes for a number of trade and generalist publications and writes his own blog (www.change-effect.com) and sits on the Government Panel implementing the new T-Level prorgamme.  Passionate about recruitment and talent management, he provides input into the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) and supports the Good Recruitment Campaign.

Neil is a compelling and engaging speaker and this will be an interactive session which will be of interest to the entire membership.
