Police Line Do Not Cross! – Could business psychology be used to break through policing’s exclusionary organisational culture?
July 20 at 6:00 pm - 7:30 pmFree – £18.00
Speaker: Dave Houchin, ABP member and Public Sector Consultant in Leadership and Business Psychology
Using Business Psychology as one of a series of tools to achieve diversity through successful integration
Twenty-three years after the UK police service was accused of institutional racism, some communities still feel disaffected. Only this year, the Metropolitan Police Commissioner resigned amid media claims of racism and misogyny. This session explores why decades of police diversity training may have been ineffective and how the wide ranging approach available through the consensual application of business psychology may offer a solution that better equips forces to change from within. It is framed around a case study of a successful pilot scheme that went on to win the Excellence in Embracing Diversity category of the 2021 ABP Awards.
Dave Houchin is a former senior police officer and now working as a consultant and business psychologist with particular interest in leadership. With an MSc in Leadership and Management he also worked on a number of other training programmes including the UK’s Direct Entry Superintendents scheme as well as delivering training internationally, including to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in Nigeria.
He has overseen complex operations and worked collaboratively across agencies with wide partnership experience, participating or chairing a number of cross-sector groups and boards. His approach is reflected in his emphasis on sustainable improvement in performance management through enhanced self-awareness and consistency in role modelling the right cultural values. He has delivered TED talks in this area.
